WGA West Cancels 2026 Los Angeles Awards Ceremony as Staff Strike Intensifies
The Writers Guild of America West has announced the cancellation of its 2026 Los Angeles awards ceremony, citing the ongoing staff union strike that began in February.
WGA West President Michele Mulroney communicated the decision to award presenters and participants, stating that an alternative celebration for Los Angeles-based nominees would be scheduled at a later date. The cancellation affects the ceremony originally planned for the JW Marriott hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
The WGA Staff Union, representing approximately 110 employees, initiated the strike on February 17, alleging that union management failed to negotiate in good faith. Key demands include increased compensation and implementation of just cause protections in employee discipline procedures.
The Writers Guild of America East will proceed with its New York ceremony scheduled for March 8, ensuring that award winners will be publicly recognized. Roy Wood Jr. will host the New York event, while Stephen Colbert is slated to receive the Walter Bernstein Award.
Comedian Atsuko Okatsuka was scheduled to host the Los Angeles ceremony, with filmmaker James Cameron set to receive the WGAW Laurel Award. The fate of these recognitions remains uncertain.
Industry observers note that this development occurs as the guilds prepare for upcoming contract negotiations with major studios, potentially complicating labor relations in the entertainment sector.
