Intelligence Briefing: LEGO Launches Smart Brick Platform with Star Wars Integration
The LEGO Group has officially launched its Smart Brick technology platform, representing the most significant development in the company's product line in fifty years, with initial offerings focused on the Star Wars franchise.
The Smart Brick integrates a miniature computer, microphone, and near-field communication technology into a standard 2x4 brick format. This innovation enables interactive experiences with compatible construction sets through embedded NFC tags and smart minifigures.
Eight Star Wars-themed sets have been released at launch, with three including the Smart Brick component alongside a charging cradle and cable. The remaining sets are designated as "Smart Play compatible," requiring separate acquisition of the Smart Brick.
Pricing for sets including the Smart Brick ranges from $69.99 for the Darth Vader's TIE Fighter to $159.99 for the Throne Room Duel & A-Wing configuration. The premium reflects the inclusion of two Smart Bricks in the higher-priced offering.
The technology was recognized as "best in show" at CES 2026, with industry analysts noting the platform's potential to transform interactive play experiences. The integration of computational elements into traditional building blocks represents a strategic pivot toward technology-enhanced play patterns.
