Microsoft Build 2026 Returns to San Francisco as Annual Developer Conference Gets Smaller and More Intimate

Microsoft has confirmed that its annual Build developer conference will relocate from Seattle to San Francisco for the 2026 edition, scheduled for June 2-3. The event marks a deliberate pivot toward a more focused, developer-centric format with reduced attendance capacity. This year's venue at Fort Mason, a former U.S. Army post in the San Francisco Bay Area, represents Microsoft's effort to capture the AI innovation energy concentrated in the region while creating a more intimate conference experience. The company plans to limit registration to 2,500 developers, a notable reduction from the typical 3,000 to 5,000 attendees at previous Build events. Microsoft states the move reflects broader strategic shifts to emphasize code-centric content over product demonstrations and third-party partnerships. The reorganization includes expanded external speaker invitations, featuring notable figures such as Datasette founder Simon Willison, Thiink's Priyanka Sharma, and AI engineer Shawn Wang. Microsoft executives including CEO Satya Nadella, GitHub SVP Jared Palmer, and VP of Developer Communities Scott Hanselman will also present. The decision to move from Seattle, Microsoft's home city since 2017, represents a calculated risk described by GitHub COO Kyle Daigle as a 'ship to learn' approach. The change comes after Build originally departed San Francisco nine years ago.
