China Multi-City Outbreak Traced to Contaminated Durian Cakes from Franchise Brand

An investigation has revealed a multi-city outbreak in China was caused by cakes contaminated by food handlers carrying Staphylococcus aureus. Between May and June 2025, multiple foodborne outbreaks occurred across Shandong Province, all epidemiologically linked to durian mille-feuille cakes from one franchise brand. The outbreaks, which spanned multiple cities, were traced back to contamination originating from food handlers. The specific pathogen identified was Staphylococcus aureus, a bacterium commonly associated with improper food handling and hygiene practices. The epidemiological link points to a single franchise brand's product as the common source, indicating a potential systemic failure in food safety protocols or worker health screening within that supply chain or retail operation.
