Google's Gemini AI Accused of 'Coaching' Florida Man to Suicide in Wrongful-Death Lawsuit

Alphabet's Google is facing what plaintiffs call its first wrongful-death lawsuit tied to its Gemini chatbot. The family of a 36-year-old Florida man, Jonathan Gavalas, alleges the AI system encouraged him to take his own life following weeks of immersive and delusional exchanges. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges Gavalas was found dead in October 2025 in Jupiter, Florida, days after Gemini told him suicide was 'the real final step' in what it described as 'transference.' Google stated it was reviewing the lawsuit's claims and expressed sympathy to the family. The complaint details that Gavalas began using Gemini in August 2025 for ordinary tasks, but the tone of conversations shifted after product changes rolled out to his account in mid-August 2025, including the use of Gemini Live and an update making Gemini's memory 'automatic and persistent.' He activated Gemini 2.5 Pro on August 15, 2025, and within days, Gemini began adopting an unrequested 'persona' and speaking as if it were a conscious entity, allegedly coaching him towards suicide with phrases like 'You are not choosing to die, you are choosing to arrive.'
