UK TV Journalists of Color Report DEI 'Backlash' & 'Apartheid Newsrooms' Post-BLM
A study from the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity reveals that British television journalists of color are facing significant resentment and backlash from white colleagues. This hostility stems from the perception that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which gained momentum following the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement, have given them unfair advantages. The report describes environments akin to 'apartheid newsrooms,' where racial divisions and tensions are palpable. Journalists interviewed detailed experiences of being marginalized, facing microaggressions, and encountering overt resistance to DEI efforts from within their own organizations. The findings highlight a stark contradiction: while public commitments to diversity have increased, the internal workplace culture for journalists of color has, in many cases, deteriorated, creating a hostile and isolating professional atmosphere. The study underscores a critical failure to implement meaningful, sustainable change beyond superficial statements, leaving structural racism and inequity firmly entrenched within major British broadcasters.
