Nex Playground Price Hike: Budget Console Jumps to $299 as AI Demand Squeezes Supply
The Nex Playground, the surprise holiday hit that briefly outsold the Xbox, is losing its budget-friendly edge. Starting April 1st, the family-focused, Kinect-like console will see its price increase by $50, moving from $249 to $299. This move signals that inflationary pressures and component shortages are now directly impacting the previously resilient budget gaming segment, making 'everything about video games' more expensive.
In a statement, Nex Playground co-founder and CEO David Lee pointed to a familiar culprit: rising costs for key components. He specifically cited significant price increases over the past six months for memory (DDR) and storage (eMMC). Lee indicated these industry-wide hikes are being driven partly by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure, which is consuming supply and driving up costs for consumer electronics manufacturers.
The price adjustment places the Nex Playground in a more competitive and challenging market position. Its initial success was built on offering a unique, active gaming experience at a notably lower price point than mainstream consoles. This increase risks alienating its core family audience who are particularly price-sensitive. The move also reflects broader macroeconomic and supply chain pressures that are now cascading down from high-performance AI chips to affect even the most accessible gaming hardware.
