SEBI & Google Launch 'Verified' Badge for Stock Trading Apps on Play Store to Combat Fraud
In a direct move against fraudulent investment platforms, India's market regulator SEBI has partnered with Google to introduce a 'verified' badge for legitimate stock trading apps on the Play Store. This initiative, described as a first-of-its-kind, aims to provide a clear visual signal to users, helping them distinguish SEBI-registered entities from potential scam operations. The collaboration targets a significant vulnerability where unregulated apps have been able to masquerade as legitimate services, directly threatening investor security.
The program will initially apply to all stock trading apps offered by entities registered with SEBI. According to an official statement, the verified label will later be extended to apps from other regulated financial intermediaries. SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey emphasized the goal is to clamp down on 'bad actors' in the investment space. The Economic Times reported that nearly 600 financial services apps in India have already been assigned this verification status, indicating a substantial initial rollout.
This partnership places significant pressure on unverified apps operating on the Play Store, potentially leading to increased scrutiny and a harder environment for fraudulent actors to attract users. For investors, it introduces a crucial, though not infallible, layer of trust signaling. The move also highlights the growing role of major tech platforms like Google as gatekeepers in regulated financial ecosystems, setting a precedent for how digital marketplaces can collaborate with national regulators to mitigate systemic risks.
