Raw Farm Denies FDA Link as E. coli Outbreak Grows to 9 Cases, One with Kidney Failure

A California raw dairy producer is in a direct standoff with federal regulators as an E. coli outbreak linked to its unpasteurized cheese and milk expands, with one patient now suffering from life-threatening kidney failure. The Food and Drug Administration reported two new illnesses, bringing the total to nine cases across three states. Three people have been hospitalized, and one has developed Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a severe complication that can cause kidney failure. Despite the mounting evidence, Raw Farm continues to deny any link to the illnesses and has refused to issue a product recall.

Investigators have interviewed eight of the nine sickened individuals. All eight reported consuming unpasteurized dairy products. While one person could not recall a brand, the other seven specifically identified products from Raw Farm. The consumption details are precise: five people ate Raw Farm's raw cheddar cheese, and two drank its raw milk. The FDA's case is strengthened by laboratory evidence; whole genome sequencing of the E. coli isolates from the patients shows a high degree of similarity, strongly suggesting a common source of contamination.

The refusal to recall products by Raw Farm places significant pressure on the FDA's regulatory authority and public health messaging. This standoff creates a critical gap in consumer protection, as potentially contaminated products may remain on the market.
