Bluesky Founders Launch 'Attie' AI, Letting Users Build Custom Feeds with Natural Language

The team behind the decentralized social network Bluesky has launched a new AI-powered app that hands users direct control over their content algorithms. Called Attie, the tool allows anyone to create a custom feed by simply typing a request in natural language, such as asking for "posts about folklore, mythology, and traditional music, especially Celtic traditions." This move effectively outsources the job of feed curation from a central, opaque algorithm to a user-directed AI assistant, signaling a potential shift in how social media content is filtered and discovered.

Unveiled by former Bluesky CEO Jay Graber and CTO Paul Frazee, Attie is built on top of Bluesky's underlying AT Protocol (atproto) and is powered by Anthropic's Claude AI. Initially, these AI-generated custom feeds will be confined to the standalone Attie app. However, the stated plan is to eventually integrate this functionality directly into the main Bluesky client and other apps built on the atproto ecosystem, potentially making user-crafted algorithms a core feature of the decentralized social web.

This development places Bluesky at the forefront of experimenting with user-agentic content discovery, a stark contrast to the engagement-optimized, centrally controlled feeds of mainstream platforms. By leveraging an external AI model like Claude, Bluesky is also testing a modular approach where different intelligence layers can be plugged into its open protocol. The success of Attie could pressure other social networks to offer similar transparency and control, while its integration path will test the scalability and social dynamics of highly personalized, algorithmically-assembled communities.
