The global liquefied natural gas (LNG) crisis has intensified, moving from a geopolitical shock to a literal storm. Chevron's Wheatstone gas plant in Western Australia, a critical export facility, has sustained damage from Tropical Cyclone Narelle, hampering restart efforts and pushing a full return to operations back by weeks. This new physical disruption compounds the severe supply shock that began when Iranian attacks temporarily shuttered 17% of Qatar's output from the massive Ras Laffan plant just two weeks prior.

The cyclone is estimated to have disrupted Australian LNG facilities along the northern and western coasts, affecting supply equivalent to over 30 million metric tons per year. According to MST Marquee analyst Saul Kavonic, when combined with the Middle East conflict disruptions, more than a quarter of global LNG supply has now been impacted. The Wheatstone incident transforms a regional weather event into a significant global market pressure point, adding tangible logistical turmoil to the existing geopolitical risk premium.

This dual-threat scenario—simultaneous disruptions from conflict in a key producing region and extreme weather in another—creates unprecedented strain on the tightly balanced global LNG supply chain.
