Raw Farm, a major producer of raw dairy products, has compiled a long and troubling record of pathogen contamination spanning nearly two decades. The company, formerly known as Organic Pastures, has been linked to repeated outbreaks of E. coli, Campylobacter, Listeria, Salmonella, and most recently, H5N1 avian influenza, resulting in hundreds of consumer illnesses and numerous product recalls. This pattern reveals a persistent public health risk associated with its unpasteurized offerings.
The documented incidents begin in 2006 with an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak that sickened six people, two of whom developed the severe kidney complication Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). The pattern continued with Campylobacter outbreaks in 2007, 2008, 2012, and 2015. A particularly severe E. coli outbreak in 2016 left nine people ill, with two again developing HUS. The most recent and significant surge in cases occurred in late 2023 and 2024, with a Salmonella outbreak in December 2023 sickening 19 people, followed by a much larger outbreak in October 2024 linked to 171 illnesses. Concurrently, the company faced its first H5N1-related recalls in late 2024 for raw milk, cream, and cheese.
