China Unveils Compact 'Coil Gun' for Covert, Non-Lethal Law Enforcement Operations

China has introduced a new handheld electromagnetic weapon, a compact coil gun designed for discreet, non-lethal use in law enforcement and covert operations. According to state broadcaster CCTV, the pistol-like device can fire between 1,000 and 2,000 rounds per minute and is capable of penetrating wooden boards from distances of several dozen yards. Its defining feature is adjustable power settings, allowing operators to switch between a penetrating mode and a lower setting intended to incapacitate rather than kill a target.

The weapon, also known as a Gauss gun, uses electromagnetic coils to accelerate projectiles. It features a 12-inch barrel and is reported to be light enough for comfortable one-handed operation, offering significant mobility advantages in tight urban environments where traditional firearms or larger coil guns would be impractical. The device is also equipped with a laser pointer to improve accuracy, suggesting a focus on precision in its intended operational scenarios.
