China's Renewable Power Waste Crisis Deepens as Curtailments Surge

China's green energy transition is hitting a critical bottleneck: the country is now wasting renewable power at an alarming rate. Curtailment rates for solar and wind energy are surging, approaching the very limits that Beijing relaxed just two years ago in a push to accelerate clean power deployment. This growing inefficiency signals a major failure in grid integration and storage capacity, threatening to undermine the world's largest build-out of renewable energy infrastructure.

The core of the problem lies in the mismatch between rapid generation growth and lagging infrastructure. While China has installed record-breaking amounts of solar panels and wind turbines, its power grids and energy storage systems have not kept pace. This forces grid operators to deliberately disconnect or 'curtail' renewable sources to maintain grid stability, effectively throwing away clean electricity.
