Karnataka High Court Warns ED: ₹1 Lakh Cost for 'Unnecessary' Appeal in WinZO Cofounder Bail Case

The Karnataka High Court has issued a sharp warning to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), threatening to impose a cost of ₹1 Lakh on the agency if its appeal against the bail granted to WinZO cofounder Paavan Nanda is deemed frivolous. Justice S Rachaiah explicitly stated that the ED's appeal must demonstrate either a violation of bail conditions by Nanda or an active attempt to suppress facts in the case. The warning follows a Bengaluru sessions court's decision in February to grant bail to Nanda in a money laundering case filed by the ED. The agency's case originates from multiple FIRs registered across Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Delhi, alleging a range of offences including cheating, impersonation, misuse of KYC details, and the wrongful blocking of user accounts. The ED has alleged that WinZO's gaming platform was used as a conduit for these activities, forming the basis of its money laundering probe.
