U.S. Government Launches Mandatory Power Audit on Data Centers

The U.S. government is moving to force data centers to disclose their energy consumption. In a letter obtained by WIRED, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) informed two senators of its plan to develop a mandatory assessment of the sector's electricity use. This marks a significant escalation in federal scrutiny of an industry whose explosive growth is increasingly straining power grids and raising climate concerns.

The EIA, a statistical agency within the Department of Energy, is responding to a formal request from Senators Ed Markey and Jeff Merkley. The planned mandatory survey represents a departure from the agency's typical voluntary data collection, signaling a new level of regulatory pressure. The move directly targets the opaque energy footprint of massive server farms operated by tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, as well as countless smaller colocation facilities.

The mandatory assessment will provide the first comprehensive, government-verified dataset on a sector that has largely self-reported its environmental impact. This data is critical for policymakers grappling with grid reliability, regional energy planning, and national climate goals.
