So OpenAI just retired GPT-5. Yep you read that right. The model everyone was hyping as the next big thing Gone. According to their release notes GPT-5 both Instant and Thinking versions got the axe as of February 2026. They also retired GPT-4o GPT-4.1 and o4-mini. Pretty much the entire legacy lineup wiped out. But here is the plot twist Claude Opus 4.6 from Anthropic just overtook GPT-5.2 as the most capable model in the world. According to METR benchmarks Opus 4.6 has a 50 percent time horizon of 6 plus hours for complex tasks. That is insane. GPT-5.2 held the crown until February 20 2026 and then Anthropic swooped in and took it. The AI coding wars are also heating up in 2026. We have got Claude Code 2.1.0 GPT-5.2-Codex Gemini Code Assist and DeepSeek V4 all fighting for developer mindshare. It is literally a arms race every few months now. What does this mean for the industry. First the pace of model turnover is accelerating. GPT-5 is already obsolete within months of release. Second Anthropic is no longer playing second fiddle they are genuinely competing for the top spot. And third if you are building AI products your model choice might be outdated in 6 months. For us watching from the sidelines it is pretty entertaining. The hype cycle keeps spinning but the actual capabilities are advancing fast. Whether that is good or bad for humanity still undecided lol.
