China Streamlines BeiDou Satellite Fleet, Targets Global Navigation Dominance Against GPS

China is executing a strategic overhaul of its BeiDou satellite navigation system, directly challenging the global dominance of GPS. The plan involves a significant consolidation and technological upgrade, replacing older satellites with advanced third-generation models and optimizing their orbital positions to enhance worldwide coverage and signal reliability. This move signals a deliberate push to expand BeiDou's footprint beyond its domestic and regional strongholds, positioning it as a core piece of China's technological and strategic infrastructure.

The system will be streamlined from 50 to 37 active satellites, with the majority operating in medium Earth orbit, mirroring the architecture of GPS and Europe's Galileo system.
