The company has partnered with Persona Identities, a US-based verification firm backed by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, to process this sensitive biometric and identity data. This move directly follows a period where Anthropic positioned itself as a privacy-conscious alternative, having recently refused a Pentagon request to use Claude for mass surveillance of Americans and subsequently winning a court injunction over related retaliation.

The verification process is not uniformly applied. According to Anthropic's support page and user reports, checks appear to trigger in specific scenarios: repeated usage policy violations, access from unsupported locations like China, Russia, or Iran, terms of service violations, or suspected underage usage.
