OpenAI is going hardware, and they are not messing around. The company has assembled a team of more than 200 people working on a family of AI-powered devices, according to The Information. We are talking smart speakers, potentially smart glasses, and even smart lamps. This is a whole new frontier for the ChatGPT creator. The smart speaker is apparently being priced somewhere between $200 to $300, which is actually pretty reasonable when you think about what they are trying to build. It will not be released until at least March 2027, so we have got some waiting to do, but the details that have leaked so far are pretty exciting. What is interesting is that their first device will not actually be a wearable - it will be a standalone device with a camera. That is different from what a lot of people expected. Maybe they learned something from the Apple Vision Pro launch and want to start with something more proven before diving into wearables. This move makes a lot of sense when you think about it. OpenAI has the AI capabilities, they just need better ways to get that technology into people hands and homes. A smart speaker with GPT integration could be genuinely useful in ways that current voice assistants just are not. The competition in this space is going to be intense though - Amazon, Google, and Apple all have established smart home ecosystems. But if anyone can shake things up, it is probably OpenAI. They have already changed how we think about AI chatbots, so why not smart home devices too?
