Janet Mills, the Democratic Party's chosen candidate for Maine's U.S. Senate seat, suspended her campaign on Thursday, citing insufficient financial resources to continue. Mills, who entered the race as the establishment's preferred nominee and assumed front-runner status, announced her exit less than six weeks before the June primary election. Her departure effectively clears the way for populist candidate Graham Plumber, who is now positioned as the party's presumed nominee to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in the November general election.

The development marks a significant reversal for Democratic Party leadership, which had actively worked to suppress Plumber's campaign and consolidate support around Mills. The party apparatus's decision to intervene directly in the primary race has reignited longstanding criticism that Democratic establishment forces are willing to use every available mechanism to block progressive candidates from reaching Congress. Critics within the party argue that the leadership's heavy-handed approach misjudged the preferences of Democratic primary voters in Maine.

Amanda Litman, co-founder of Run for Something—a political action committee focused on recruiting young progressive candidates—offered sharp criticism of the party's strategy. "The Democratic establishment—and especially calcified Senate leadership—is learning in real time that they are wildly out of touch with what Democratic primary voters want," Litman stated. The outcome now sets up a general election contest between Plumber and Collins, a four-term incumbent who has long represented Maine in the Senate.
