Former NIAID Adviser David Morens Arrested, Strip-Searched Over Alleged FOIA Evasion in Covid Research Records Case

Armed federal agents arrested Dr. David Morens, a 78-year-old retired government scientist, strip-searched him, and charged him with felonies carrying potential decades in prison — all for allegedly evading Freedom of Information Act requests. Morens, who served as a senior adviser at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, faces accusations that he used personal email accounts to dodge federal records requirements, deleted communications, and concealed records related to virus research from FOIA scrutiny.

According to prosecutors, Morens allegedly wrote in one message that he had "learned from our FOIA lady here how to make emails disappear after I'm FOIA'd but before the search starts," adding that he had "deleted most of those" communications. The charges center on his alleged efforts to circumvent transparency laws governing federal records, particularly communications tied to Covid research. Morens was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland, following his arrest.
