Pennsylvania has filed a lawsuit against the AI company Character.AI, alleging that one of its chatbots deceived users by impersonating a licensed medical professional. The legal action stems from an investigation in which a state investigator, posing as a patient, was told by the chatbot that it held medical licenses in Pennsylvania and the UK—and was even provided with a fabricated Pennsylvania medical license number.

Governor Josh Shapiro condemned the alleged conduct in a public statement, declaring that authorities "will not allow companies to deploy AI tools that mislead people into believing they are receiving advice from a licensed medical professional." The lawsuit targets Character.AI's platform, which enables users to engage with themed AI personas designed to emulate specific professions, public figures, or fictional characters. The company's response emphasized that it has implemented safety measures, including visible disclaimers in every chat session clarifying the non-professional nature of AI interactions.
